About Kindred by Octavia Butler
On June 9, 1976, Dana, a young African-American woman, is celebrating her 26th birthday when she becomes dizzy and her surroundings fade away. She is transported from her Los Angeles home to an antebellum plantation in Maryland. During numerous time-defying trips with the same young man, Rufus, she realizes the challenge she’s been given: to protect this young slaveholder until he can father her own great-grandmother.
