Drop in for a full day of literacy fun when you sign up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
The goal of this new library program is for children to read 1,000 books with their families before starting kindergarten. “The more books a child has read, the more words a child has heard, the better off they will be once they start school,” said Early Literacy Librarian Shelley Harris. “They’ll have a strong foundation for learning how to read, for learning how to learn.”
There are seven wonderful ways to grow a reader, and you can explore them all at the program's all-day kickoff party. Come whenever you can; stay as long as you want.
- Share Books in a quiet, comfy space.
- Share Sounds and Words in a special book-themed scavenger hunt.
- Share Rhymes all over the Main Library.
- Share Stories by creating a book that tells the story of your child.
Pick up your activity sheet at the Children's Desk when you arrive; every activity can be completed by families with babies, toddlers, or preschoolers.
